Day 4
Anand Karaj
ਅਨੰਦ ਕਾਰਜ
The sacred Sikh ceremony — four laavaan around the Guru Granth Sahib.
The ceremony itself. Begins before sunrise with photoshoots, transitions into the baraat procession, milni (formal greeting between families), the sacred Anand Karaj ceremony with the four laavaan, langar lunch for 350+, and ends with the emotional vidaai. The longest, most logistically complex day of the entire wedding.
A little history
The four laavaan were composed by Guru Ram Das in the 16th century. Each round represents a stage of love and union with the divine. The Anand Karaj was formalised as a distinct Sikh wedding ceremony by Maharaja Ranjit Singh’s court, and codified in the Anand Marriage Act of 1909.
Who attends
Everyone — extended family, friends, community, work, neighbours.
Typical guests
300–500 people
What to plan
- Venue (gurdwara or licensed venue with ceremony space, seats 350+)
- Paathi / keertan jatha (book 4 months ahead)
- Pagh banan wale (turban tiers — book 2–3 separate tiers for different locations)
- 50+ paghs and rumaals for guests
- Milni haar (garlands for the milni — 8–12 pairs)
- Decor — palki, mandap, stage flowers, langar hall
- Catering for 350+ (langar style + tea + post-ceremony lunch)
- Live violin or musician for the ceremony itself
- Transport — bus for baraat, separate transport for bride’s family
- Photographer + videographer (4 AM through vidaai)
- Hair + makeup team (start at 4 AM)
- Doli samaan (thaal, kolli, rice, coconut)
- Crowd management volunteers (5+ people)
Samaan checklist
Avoid these mistakes
- Confirm sangat seating early — many gurdwaras are floor-only
- Brief the photographer on doli timing — it’s easy to miss
- Have a coordinator dedicated ONLY to milni — it descends into chaos
- Don’t over-schedule the morning — 4 AM photoshoots almost always run late
- Charge bride’s phone overnight — she won’t have time during the day
- Plan langar overflow — guest counts always exceed RSVPs by 10–20%
